Master Series - Behind the Scenes

Our most iconic collection of handwoven wool grids, plaids, and stripes dates to 1978 - and is how the Elizabeth Eakins brand was born. Every aspect of production takes place in our Connecticut Studio, from hand dying the natural New Zealand wool yarn, to hand weaving and finishing.

Kate, The Dyer will begin coloring all the wool materials for the rug- usually the warp is dyed for Wool wovens and the weft is dyed for the Master Series linen series. She adds acid dye to the pots until the color is achieved. They are then rinsed off, spun in the washing machine, “popped” so they have no knots and are able to be wound when dry. They are hung over night and dry by natural air or fans - never a drying machine.

The skeins then go to the seamstresses and Johnny to be wound into balls of wool so the weavers can use them. He counts everything and boxes up each project.

All the materials - the wool and whatever linen is needed - are then given over to the weavers to get things going. Weavers start by winding their warps on the warping mill and making “bundles” of yarn to then put onto the loom. We set up the looms (it usually takes a full day to set up) and begin weaving.

Each panel gets woven, then brought over to the seamstresses to repair and then lace each panel together to construct the rug.

Woven panels are laced together and will usually will have some sort of binding or finishing detail added and cut to size - A rug pad is usually cut to fit the size of rug.

It gets inspected and final measurement taken and then it is complete and ready to ship to the client.
